Mystery Blanket Club 2026, post 4: May (Mail-Out 4)

Debbie Abrahams

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE MAY INSTALMENT OF MBC26! Over the past month we have had highs and lows in our household, reminding me that life is a rollercoaster and each day is as precious as the last. We were devastated to lose our beloved eighteen-month old cat, Zelda, who was sister to Lemmy her kid brother who passed away after a short battle with cancer last August. Within days of that shock and total heartbreak I was in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk with Steve totally overwhelmed and delighted to meet my all-time idol and inspiration, Toyah Willcox on her Chameleon tour.

Below: me, Toyah and Steve at the Meet & Greet.

Above: Toyah on stage singing 'I Want To Be Free!'

So it has been a bizarre time of extreme highs and extreme lows for us, which I am hoping will level out a bit as we move into one of my most favourite months of the year, May.

We have been super busy packing all the second parcels for the blanket, plus I have been working non-stop on new projects for forthcoming workshops, all of which are coming along too soon - where have the past four months gone!?!?! In less than a couple of weeks time I will be on my way to Posara in Italy to join fourteen lovely ladies for a week of knitting in the sunshine at The Watermill, and then In June I am returning to the wonderful Seamill Hydro Hotel in West Kilbride for another knitting holiday with more wonderful ladies. So it's a super busy time at the moment, but I am embracing it all wholeheartedly and feel grateful to be so busy doing what I love.

Below: some of the ladies enjoying the sunshine at the Seamill Hydro Hotel.

If you've got fifteen minutes to spare, then tune into my May intro vid, and we can have a little chat together before I tell you all the latest MBC26 news...

So, onto this month's squares and latest club news! This month you have five squares to knit, with choices for two of them. So you will need to make some decisions about which ones you want to knit for your blanket. Hopefully my tips and suggestions in the blog will help you make those decisions, plus you have all the tech vids to guide you through some of the more advanced knitting techniques should you need some help with them. This is a list of what tech vids are available to you now via the link to Tutorials on our Homepage:

ALL OF THE MYSTERY BLANKET PARCELS HAVE NOW BEEN POSTED, so if you have not received yours yet, it is on it's way to you. Royal Mail have changed their collection rules and reduced the amount that can be picked up each day from us to a mere twenty, so as you can imagine with five hundred parcels to post, this process now takes us much longer than it used to. The last few UK parcels were posted on the 1st May so unfortunately they won't be received until after the Bank Holiday weekend. However, this won't hold you up as there are some squares in the May mail-out that you can get on with until your parcel arrives.

All of the parcels have been posted using Royal Mail Tracked delivery (UK and overseas), so if you have not got your tracking number, contact Sue at sue@debbieabrahams.com and she will email it to you.

IF YOU ORDERED PRINTED PATTERNS THEN THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY TO YOU. In a recent email to all the members we let you know that the posting of the printed patterns was going to be delayed due to our local printing firm moving premises. However, I am happy to say that they have now been printed and posted and are on their way to you.

If you are eager to get knitting, remember that you can access the digital file from your Debbie Abrahams account on our website. This is where all of your digital patterns are stored - not only for the Mystery Blanket Club, but also any kits or patterns that you have purchased from us through our website.

AS I MENTIONED IN MY INTRO VID, WE SENT YOU AN EMAIL RECENTLY WHICH INCLUDED A CONTENTS LIST FOR YOUR SECOND PARCEL. So when you parcel arrives, please make sure that you check it carefully to make sure that everything is in there. If you can't find that email from us, then the contents of your kit is listed on page 2 of the May mail-out, so you check it off from there. If anything is missing, please contact me at debbie@debbieabrahams.com and I will get it straight in the post to you.

EARLY BIRDS WHO QUALIFIED FOR THE BALEARIC SUNGLASSES KNITTING KIT will find it included in their second parcel. It's the pink ball of yarn in a separate package with lining fabric, beads and a magnetic clasp. All of the members will find the pattern instructions for it in their Debbie Abrahams account on our website, ready to download and use.

It's a one-colour project encrusted with lots of beads, and an ideal accessory to keep small items cosy and safe - not just sunglasses, but it could be used for tissues, a phone, your credit cards or anything else that you can fit inside it. The ball of yarn is ample to make the case, so, as it states at the beginning of the pattern instructions, if you want to make it slightly bigger there is enough yarn to do so. I hope that you enjoy making it!

YOU WILL FIND IN YOUR KNITTING KIT A SMALL COLOURED ENVELOPE, WHICH HAS YOUR WOVEN LABEL INSIDE. So if you have not yet guessed the title of the blanket and want to keep guessing, put it somewhere safe and open it when the mystery is revealed. Just don't forget where you've put it!

I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU CHECK THE DYE LOTS OF THE YARN IN YOUR SECOND PARCEL, as repeat colours may be different to what you had in your first parcel.

If you did not keep the ball-bands, then make sure that if you are knitting a square that is all one colour (such as Square 10, Labyrinth), you use a new ball for this. In squares where multi colours are used, mixed dye lots will not be a problem and won't be noticeable.

'THE BRILLIANT BEAD CLUB' IS MY BRAND NEW KAL, AND I AM DELIGHTED THAT SO MANY OF YOU HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP TO IT! This unique KAL focuses on individual seasonal projects that would fit in very nicely between knitting your blanket squares, meaning that you can keep knitting 'Debbie' projects all year round! There is an exclusive benefit for all MBC26 members: enjoy £10 off the cost of Silver and Gold packages (discount will be processed at checkout).

HAVE YOU GUESSED THE TITLE OF THE 2026 MYSTERY BLANKET YET?!? If you haven't, then this month's squares, together with another letter in the word puzzle below might help point you in the right direction. We have had some more correct guesses come in over the past few weeks, so well done to all these lovely members: Kathryn McAteer, Kate Wood, Julia Green, Marguerite Curran, Marla Carroll, Aliosn Puplett and Annette Lether who all sent in a correct guess.

This month the letter I am adding to the word puzzle is 'U':

_  _  U L / _ F / _  _  R  _  _  _  _

If you have any ideas of what it could be, then please let me know by emailing your guess directly to me at: debbie@debbieabrahams.com. A lot of people have guessed the second and third words correctly, so the letter 'U' this month in the first word might be super helpful. So have another think, and if you have any ideas get in touch to see whether you are right!

THERE ARE FIVE SQUARES TO KNIT THIS MONTH, WITH TWO OPTIONS TO CHOOSE:

Square 10: Labyrinth- cable pattern with twisted stitches (same for both options):

Square 17: Bahia 2- striped pattern with garter stitch and hooked-in beads (same for both options):

Square 22: Aromatic - striped pattern with garter stitch and textured stitches (same for both options):

Square 23, Option One: Souk - fairisle pattern with hooked-in beads:

Square 23, Option Two: Souk- stocking stitch with hooked-in beads:

Square 43, Option One: Fes 2- intarsia pattern with embroidery and a sewn-on button detail:

Square 43, Option Two: Fes 2- three-colour slip-stitch pattern:

Don't forget to check out the Pattern notes and tips for each square which are to the right of the main image on the first pattern page. This advice will give you important information about the square and things to watch out for. Also take note of the description of the square under the title which tells you what the stitch structure is.

SQUARE 10, LABYRINTH: this cable pattern combines twisted stitches with stocking stitch in an all-over heavily textured square.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You can knit this square from either a worded pattern or a chart - or follow both if preferred. The worded pattern matches the chart row for row which should make it easier if you need to cross-check an instruction.

The first thing to note about this square is that the cabled stitches are crossed over on wrong-side rows. If you have not cabled on a wrong-side row before, fear not as it is just as easy as a right-side row - stitches are held on a cable needle at either the front or the back of the work as stitches from the left needle are worked.

The cable instructions are c8f and c8b. However, those of you who are familiar with cable patterns, beware, as these are not your usual standard abbreviations. In a standard cable pattern c8b and c8f means splitting the stitches into 4/4 and crossing them over equally and knitting them. But in this pattern the stitches are split differently, and knitted AND purled. So it is super important that you read the instructions for them in the Abbreviations on page 23 of your May mail-out. They are not difficult to knit, just different to what you may be used to for this cable pattern.

A smaller needle is recommended for this square, 3.25mm. I had to stretch out my square quite a lot when I blocked it, but after it was dry it measured the correct dimensions. However, if you think your square is knitting up too tightly, change to the next needle size up to loosen up the tension.

After the cast-on (or pick up from Square 9), there are two set-up rows which are on page 6. These rows set the stitches in the correct sequence for the cables, and there's some increases to do as well on the right-side row. The increase is 'inc 1' (increase 1) which is worked by knitting into the front and the back of the same stitch to create two stitches out of one.

There are a lot of horizontal dashes on the chart which are twisted stitches, achieved by  knitting the stitch through the back of the loop on right-side rows and purling through the back of the loop on wrong-side rows. Knitting and purling stitches through the back of the loop tightens them up and consequently makes them look much neater. If you look at the chart on page 7 you can see that they are worked in bands on rows 3-13, 27-37 and 51-61.

This square is best blocked and pressed with the right-side facing as you will be able to pin out the edges a lot easier with the fabric curling in rather than under.

SQUARE 17, BAHIA 2: a nice, easy stripe to knit with a sprinkling of Gold beads for a bit of sparkle!

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You might recognise this square from the March mail-out - it's the sister of Square 31, Bahia with some subtle colour changes. Terracotta has been swapped out for Rich Red, and Peacock for Turquoise, giving it a brighter look.

There are two different needle sizes used in this square, with smaller needles recommended to knit the rows of garter stitch. This change in needle size will help to keep these stitches to the correct tension, so it's important to change needles when instructed if you want your square to be beautifully neat and even.

As mentioned in the Pattern notes and tips on page 8, you can carry Stone all the way up the side of the work when not in use to reduce down the amount of loose ends. A simple way to do this is to work to the last stitch of the row and then wrap Stone over the working colour as you work the last stitch. Then give it a gentle pull to make sure that it is sitting tightly against the side edge, and bingo - you've moved it up a row! Repeat this at the end of every row until it comes back into use.

Gold beads are hooked-in to the square so there is no pre-threading to do - simply hook them in when you are instructed to do so.

SQUARE 22, AROMATIC: this stripe combines stocking stitch with garter stitch and some very simple to knit two-colour rows, resulting in a colourful textured pattern.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

I really enjoyed working with these pretty colours and combining colour with purl and knit stitches - it made it much more interesting to knit than a straightforward stripe, and it's simple too!

As with Square 17, there are two different needle sizes used in this square, with smaller needles recommended to knit the rows of garter stitch. It's important to change needles when instructed to keep your rows of garter stitch beautifully neat and even and avoid wobbly stitches.

You are instructed several times to transfer the stitches back onto the other needle, so it might be better to use either double-pointed or a circular needle to knit this square, then  you can just push the stitches to the other end of the needle rather than transferring them across. The reason I instruct you to do this is to reduce the number of times you need to cut and rejoin in yarns, thus resulting in fewer loose ends - which must be bonus! You just need to remember to carry any yarns not in use up the side of the work (unless you are instructed to cut them off), to keep them tight and neat against the side edges.

SQUARE 23, SOUK (OPTION ONE): now you need to make a choice between knitting a fairisle square (with some hooked-in beads) or a stocking stitch square (with lots and lots of hooked-in beads). What will it be?!?

Tech vids to help you with this square:

It does not matter which option you choose for this square as it will not affect the rest of the design. So if you fancy a bit of colourwork, go with this one. It's an all-over beaded fairisle with a strong pattern repeat, so after one repeat, you should get to know the pattern which will make the remaining rows so much easier to knit.

The background colour is in three wide bands, alternating from Peacock to Turquoise, and then back to Peacock. The second colour for the pattern also changes across the square from Indigo to Crimson, to Sulphur and then back to Indigo.

Note the needle size changes which are in the worded instructions on page 13, but NOT on the chart. You are instructed to pick up the stitches/cast-on and work chart rows 1-2 using 3.50mm needles, change to 4.00mm needles for rows 3-46, then go back to 3.50mm needles for rows 47-48. This is because rows 1-2 and 47-48 are plain stocking stitch which is looser than fairisle, so the changes in needle size will help to maintain the same tension across the whole square.

Beads are hooked-in, so no bead threading is needed. On the chart the beads look as if they are positioned off-centre, but when knitted in they will be centered between the fairisle motifs. It's one of those odd things about bead knitting, they drop down from where they are placed, hence they are always knitted in a row or two above where you want them to sit - a very important thing to remember if you want to create your own beaded designs!

SQUARE 23, SOUK (OPTION TWO): now you need to make a choice between knitting a fairisle square (with some hooked-in beads) or a stocking stitch square (with lots and lots of hooked-in beads). What will it be?!?

Tech vids to help you with this square:

It does not matter which option you choose for this square, so if you fancy an easier ride, go with this one. Just bear in mind that there are a lot of hooked-in beads, so if this isn't your thing you might need to rethink...

...but if you do like hooked-in beading then this square will be a complete joy to knit! The beads are hooked-into the work in a regular repeat pattern and always on right-side rows.

There is a useful hint in the pattern instructions on page 15 about how to keep the beads in the correct colour sequence. I did this and it made it so much easier to do. Thread them all onto a spare length of yarn following the repeat sequence at the top of page 14, and then you simply slide off one bead at a time as you need them to hook-in. It saved me so much time and consequently made the whole square much more enjoyable to knit as I could always be sure that the beads were in the correct sequence with minimum effort - a great little tip for any multi-coloured hooked-in bead pattern!

SQUARE 43, OPTION ONE, FES 2: this intarsia square is similar to Square 1, but Terracotta has been swapped for Rich Red to give it a more vibrant look.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You can choose either option for this square. But to help you make that decision it is worth noting that Square 7 should be a repeat of your choice for this square, and Square 49 should be a repeat of what you chose for Square 1 (so that the opposite corners of the blanket match).

I can hear a few distant groans at the thought of knitting another intarsia square - especially if you found Square 1 tricky. However, my thoughts are that you are better off knitting it on consecutive months as the square will be fresh in your mind and therefore you should be able to remember what you did and how you knitted it (am I making this any better?!?!?). For those of who love intarsia (like me), I don't need to give you any motivation. As I said in my vid intro at the beginning of this blog, once you get going on it, it's actually not too bad. You just need to take one row at a time and make decisions about joining in and/or carrying yarns as you go along.

So as I said for Square 1 in the previous blog, study the chart first and prep your balls or bobbins of yarn before you cast on. Remember that once you've finished with a bobbin it can be reused for another section higher up in the chart. Therefore, for this square  I wound off in total 2 bobbins of Saffron, 4 of Grass, 2 of Rich Red, and for the Sulphur I used long separate lengths of yarn.

The Swiss-darning and chain stitch embroidery are added when the knitting is complete, and preferably after the square has been blocked and pressed. The embroidery is in the same colours as Square 1, but feel free if you prefer to use your own choice of colours.

SQUARE 1, OPTION TWO, FES: if you don't fancy intarsia this month, then you can opt for this square instead which is the same slip-stitch pattern as Square 1, Option Two, but with Terracotta swapped for Rich Red.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

As I said for Option One, you can choose either option of this square, as long as your corners match.

If you didn't knit this option for Square 1, then this is a reminder of the stitch structure. The slip-stitch pattern is only across four rows, so once you've repeated it a few times you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. If you can remember that on right-side rows the yarn is brought backwards and forwards between the needles in between slipped and knitted stitches, but on wrong-side rows the yarn is always kept towards you on the wrong-side of the work as you alternately slip and purl stitches, that should help you.

When I knitted this square it helped me to talk through the wrong-side row as I worked across it - "purl one stitch, slip one stitch, purl one stitch, slip one stitch...". It can be quite easy to go wrong on this row and either slip two stitches rather than one, or purl two stitches rather than one.

And these are your five squares for May - have fun knitting them up!

A FEW OF YOU HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH, SO I AM THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE SOME LOVELY MEMBER STORIES WITH YOU FROM SOME VERY LOVELY PEOPLE!

Sue Smith from Rotorua in New Zealand sent in a fabulous picture of herself with fellow Mystery Blanket member, Raewyn Bourne. After much email correspondence with these two ladies, it was an absolute joy to see this pic of them at their local yarn store!

Sue says: "You asked me to send you a picture of my Mystery Blanket knitting friend!  We see each other most weeks at Cottage Flair, Rotorua, New Zealand. Raewyn Bourne has knitted seven of your blankets. I'm on my first! I have both your books and we are both enthusiastically knitting the 2026 Mystery Blanket!."

For me this is all part of the joy of being in the Mystery Blanket Club. Knitters are brought together and friendships are made, and this is happening all over the world! So thank you for sharing this wonderful photo, it's lovely to see you two looking so happy with your blanket squares!

The next story is a similar one, it's from Sandra Vargas from Stockholm in Sweden. Here she is with her new Mystery Blanket Club friend, Lisbeth Persson!

Sandra says: "Since you established the contact between Lisbeth and me, we have been in touch via e-mail more or less on a monthly basis. It happened that Johan and me were going to be travelling near Lisbeth's place and I asked if she would like us to meet. Lisbeth was happy about the idea and it ended up with her inviting us to a very nice lunch at her place. We enjoyed getting to know her better and the time spent together.

I thought you will like to know how this small step of putting us together has been a good experience! Here is picture of us with some of her wonderful knitting works."

This is brilliant to see, I am thrilled that you managed to meet up and get together to share your love of Mystery Blanket knitting! To hear what a great experience this has been for you is wonderful - long may those lunches and knitting sessions together continue!

The next story is from Alison Puplett from Redhill in Surrey, UK, who was thrilled to have completed her 2025 Mystery Blanket and matching cushion, and even more happy to see how well it fitted into her home decor!

Alison says: "I'm sending you a photo of my Seashore blanket and cushion which just look amazing in my lounge, especially under my Cornwall pictures on the wall! I also want to say what a joy it is to be knitting this year's blanket. I just love the colours and patterns."

I totally agree with you Alison, your blanket and cushion look wonderful in your home. Well done on getting both completed, what a great achievement! I am also thrilled to hear how much you are enjoying knitting this year's Mystery Blanket - and yes, you guessed the theme correctly, so well done!

The final story for this month is from Alison Midgley from Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland, who has a brilliant tip for making intarsia a little bit easier to handle...

Alison says: "I avoided intarsia in the ‘It’s Written In The Stars' Mystery Blanket. I thought I would have a go and got in a pickle with all the balls when turning the work round (back and front).

So with this year's blanket I tried using a long tray, and when I turn the work around, I just need to twist the tray round too. Not perfect but it really helps!"

What a wonderful tip Alison, and very helpful indeed! I think that any tips that can make Squares 1 and 43 easier to knit are very welcome, so thanks for sending this in. Now all I need to do is find a nice long tray...!

IF YOU HAVE A STORY AND ANY PICS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IN THE NEXT BLOG, BE SURE TO WRITE IN! Contact me directly at debbie@debbieabrahams.com and I will be more than happy to create a lovely little feature for you!
