Mystery Blanket Club 2026: post 3, April

Mystery Blanket Club 2026: post 3, April

Debbie Abrahams

HELLO AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE APRIL INSTALMENT OF MBC26! I am delighted to be back with all the latest news about the club, including the reveal of another five squares to add to the seven you have already knitted. That's almost a quarter of the whole blanket, so we are well on our way now!

To wake up to blue skies and the sun shining is always so motivational, and with the clocks springing forward here in the UK at the end of March we can look forward to the start of longer days and the promise of better weather. Plus of course we are celebrating Easter, so that means a mountain of chocolate too if the Easter Bunny makes his annual appearance.

This month I am giving you various different techniques to try out including intarsia, fairisle, beading, lace and cables, with some familiar stitch patterns and new ones too. If you need any guidance, or just a gentle reminder, then our tech vids are accessible via a simple click in our Tutorials section (at the top of our Homepage). These are what you can take a look at now if needed, including some new additions to the list for Intarsia and embroidery:

IF YOU ORDERED PRINTED PATTERNS THEN THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY TO YOU. The overseas were posted on the 25th March, with the UK following on after that on the 30th March.

Depending on where you live, the delivery time can vary greatly. So if you have not received your printed patterns by the 1st of the month and are eager to get knitting, remember that you can access the digital file from your Debbie Abrahams account on our website. This is where all of your digital patterns are stored - not only for the Mystery Blanket Club, but also any kits or patterns that you have purchased from us through our website.

NEW ADDENDUM ALERT IN APRIL MAIL-OUT!!!

Pages 14-15: Square 3, Majorelle 3: the bead stringing sequence for chart rows 61, 33 and 5 are incorrect. The correct sequence is: 1 Indigo, [1 Tangerine, 2 Indigo, 1 Bright Green, 2 Indigo] twice, 1 Tangerine, 1 Indigo.

And the bead stringing sequence for chart rows 47 and 19 are incorrect. The correct sequence is: 1 Indigo, [1 Bright Green, 2 Indigo, 1 Tangerine, 2 Indigo] twice, 1 Bright Green, 1 Indigo.

I remember we had a lot of issues with this when we were checking the pattern instructions, with repeatedly the incorrect bead threading added to the pattern. I think it kept reverting to a previous incorrect copy, which was all very odd. I thought we had sorted it, but obviously not, so massive apologies from me for this. It might be a good idea to mark up your printed copies with these corrections.

FOLLOWING SEVERAL ISSUES WITH OUR PAYMENT PLAN 'SPLITIT', we have made the decision to remove this option from our webshop. However, if you want to split your payments for a purchase in our shop rather than pay in one go, you are still able to do this for purchases of +£75. NOW ONTO GUESSING THE TITLE OF THE 2026 MYSTERY BLANKET, which is still a 'mystery' for most of you. We have had some more correct guesses come in, so a big congrats goes out to these lovely members: Susanne Ihmig, Charlotte Fell-Stanton, Susan Xenias, Gail Coles and Marian Atkinson who all sent in a correct guess.

This month the letter I am adding to the word puzzle is 'R':

_  _  _ L / _ F / _  _  R  _  _  _  _

If you have any ideas of what this could be, then please let me know by emailing your guess directly to me at: debbie@debbieabrahams.com. A lot of people have guessed the second and third words correctly, so it is mainly the first one that is foxing most of you. Have another think, and if you get that lightbulb moment, get in touch to see whether you are right!

THERE ARE FIVE SQUARES TO KNIT THIS MONTH, WITH TWO OPTIONS TO CHOOSE:

Square 1, Option One: Fes - intarsia pattern with embroidery and a sewn on button detail:

Square 1, Option Two: Fes - three-colour slip-stitch pattern:

Square 2, Option One: Plush - fairisle pattern with hooked-in beads:

Square 2, Option Two: Opulent- striped pattern with textured stitches and slip-stitch beads:

Square 3: Majorelle 3- slip-stitch bead pattern (same for both options):

Square 16: Embossed 2- cable pattern with twisted stitches (same for both options):

Square 37: Lanterns 2- lace pattern with hooked-in beads:

Don't forget to check out the Pattern notes and tips for each square which are to the right of the main image on the first pattern page. This advice will give you important information about the square and things to watch out for. Also take note of the description of the square under the title which tells you what the stitch structure is.

SQUARE 1, OPTION ONE, FES: this is the first intarsia square in the blanket, with added embroidery to add extra colour and texture, plus a small shell button sewn onto the centre of the motif to complete it.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

As this is the first corner square you can choose either option, but it is worth noting that your choice should match what you knit in the opposite corner later on in the project.

There is a choice to opt out of knitting this square if you'd prefer not to knit intarsia. To be honest it is a bit of a challenging square to knit because of the multiple colours involved. But if you do fancy taking it on, there is tech vid for Intarsia which will guide you through the basics of the technique on a generic piece of knitting, so why not give it a go!?!

Intarsia is a multi-coloured piece of knitting which uses separate balls of yarn for each area of colour, so there is none or minimal carrying of yarns across the back of the work (unlike fairisle). This is really important to keep the work flat and neat and unpuckered. So it is really important that you don't use the fairisle technique for this square.

Before I start knitting an intarsia square, I always study the chart first and prep my balls or bobbins of yarn. I prefer to wind the yarn onto yarn bobbins rather than work from the balls of yarn, but this decision is up to you. Remember that once you've finished with a bobbin it can be reused for another section higher up in the chart. Therefore I wound off in total 2 bobbins of Saffron, 4 of Grass, 2 of Terracotta, and for the Sulphur I used long separate lengths of yarn.

I think that geometric patterns like this one are much easier to knit than random more irregular ones as most of the stitches are moving in or out by one stitch at a time. So if you are new to intarsia, I would say don't be put off by the amount of colour changes. Just read one row at a time, marking your progress as you go with washi-tape or something similar so you keep track of which row you are on.

The embroidery is added when the knitting is complete, and preferably after the square has been blocked and pressed. There are two tech vids in our Tutorials that you can take a look at if you need some guidance: Swiss-darning and chain stitch. The Swiss-darning is represented on the chart by a small circle, and the chain stitch by a 'V'.

SQUARE 1, OPTION TWO, FES: if the challenge of intarsia is too much for you this month, then you can knit this alternative square which is an all-over slip-stitch pattern in four colours.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

As this is the first corner square you can choose either option, but it is worth noting that your choice should match what you knit in the opposite corner later on in the project.

I love slip-stitch patterns and am always intrigued by the variety of different effects you can achieve just by playing about with the arrangement of the stitches and the colours. This slip-stitch pattern is similar to the Amour Cowl and Amour Mitts kits in our online shop, but the sequence of colours has been changed which gives a different look to the square - Terracotta and Grass are used repeatedly throughout, but Sun Valley and Sulphur alternate in three bands.

The pattern is only across four rows, so once you've repeated it a few times you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. If you can remember that on right-side rows the yarn is brought backwards and forwards between the needles in between slipped and knitted stitches, but on wrong-side rows the yarn is always kept towards you on the wrong-side of the work as you alternately slip and purl stitches, that should help you.

When I knitted this square it helped me to talk through the wrong-side row as I worked across it - "purl one stitch, slip one stitch, purl one stitch, slip one stitch...". It can be quite easy to go wrong on this row and either slip two stitches rather than one, or purl two stitches rather than one. I did it a few times and had to go back and redo the row. So by saying the repeat out loud as you knit it may help you too!

SQUARE 2, OPTION ONE, PLUSH: this fairisle pattern uses the same colours as Square 36 Opulent, but the pattern itself is different.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You can choose either option for this square, it does not have to match the option you chose for the two other fairisle squares already knitted (Square 8 and Square 36).

If you are picking up stitches from Square 1 to knit this square, then you will need to follow the instructions on pages 10-11. They are pretty intense, so it might help if someone is available to read out them out loud to you. There are two sets of instructions, so you need to follow the correct one for which option you chose for Square 1.

Like Square 36, the pattern is worked partially from worded instructions and partially from charts, beginning on page 11 working from Chart 1. Rows of Indigo garter stitch separate the bands of fairisle, with beads hooked onto some of the stitches.

The fairisle sections are knitted using 3.50mm needles, but you will need to swap to 2.50mm needles for the Indigo garter stitch stripes. The changes in needle sizes are in bold in the pattern instructions so that you can see them more easily.

You are instructed several times to transfer the stitches back onto the other needle, so you might want to knit this square using a circular needle or double-points, then you would just need to slide the stitches to the other end of the needle.

There are 12 Yellow beads and 8 Indigo beads hooked into the fairisle pattern. In Chart 1 the Yellow beads are hooked onto a Peacock stitch, and in Chart 2 Indigo beads are hooked onto a Rose stitch which might be difficult to see on the chart.

SQUARE 2, OPTION TWO, OPULENT: if preferred you can knit this alternative option instead, which is exactly the same as Square 36 Option Two - hence it shares the same name.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You can choose either option for this square, it does not have to match the option you chose for the two other fairisle squares already knitted (Square 8 and Square 36).

There are changes in needle sizes throughout this square to keep the width uniform and the length correct, so these are important to do. They are hi-lighted in bold so you don't miss them.

If you knitted this option for Square 36 then you will remember that this is the pattern that has very long instructions for Rows 3 and 4. They are not difficult to knit, you just need to follow what you are being instructed to do very carefully. Once you get going on these rows you won't need to read through the instruction for every repeat across a row. After several repeats you will remember it as despite the length of the instruction, each repeat (in brackets) only uses two stitches.

Keeping the yarns picked up in the correct order across these two rows is really important to get the stitches looking like the image on page 14. On both rows Rose is picked up under Grass, and Grass is picked up on top of Rose. If you are not sure what I mean by this then take a look at my fairisle tech vid which shows the stranding technique and how to pick up the yarns from under and on top.

Don't forget to pre-thread your Yellow beads onto the Indigo yarn before you join it in. There are 21 beads in each of the four stripes.

SQUARE 3, MAJORELLE 3: if you love knitting with beads, then this square is beaded all-over using the slip-stitch method, so get your needle and thread at the ready!

Tech vids to help you with this square:

Reminder of correction for this square (as mentioned above): Pages 14-15: the bead stringing sequence for chart rows 61, 33 and 5 are incorrect.

Before you cast on you will need to thread on beads, the instructions for which are on pages 14 and 15 of the mail-out. The bead threading is similar to Squares 15 and 29 in that they are threaded on in two batches, chart rows 1-36 and chart rows 37-64. Be aware that beads are knitted in on both right-side and wrong-side rows.

As it is essential that the beading sequence is absolutely spot on to get the beaded pattern correct, so it would be a good idea to ask someone to read out the threading sequence to you so that you can happily thread on beads without having to look back and forth at the instructions yourself.

SQUARE 16, EMBOSSED 2: this cable pattern is similar to Square 30, but if you look closely you can see that the cables twist in the opposite direction. And there is a colour change too!

Tech vids to help you with this square:

You can knit this square from either a worded pattern or a chart - or follow both if preferred. The worded pattern matches the chart row for row which should make it easier if you need to cross-check an instruction.

After the cast-on (or pick up from Square 15), there are two set-up rows which are at the top of page 17. These rows set the stitches in the correct sequence for the cables, and there's some increases to do as well on the right-side row. The increase is 'inc 1' (increase 1) which is worked by knitting into the front and the back of the same stitch to create two stitches out of one.

There is a lot going on in the chart on page 18, but the key below it tells you what all the symbols mean, so there is not need to panic. The cable symbol, c7b, means cable seven stitches to the back, for which you will find an explanation for in the Abbreviations on page 27.

You may well remember from Square 16 that the horizontal dash means to knit the stitch through the back of the loop on the right-side and purl through the back of the loop on the wrong-side. So actually, once you get used to the pattern, it's really just a ribbed cable with sections of the stitches twisted. Knitting and purling stitches through the back of the loop tightens them up and consequently makes them look much neater, which you can see in the image on page 16.

The last point to make is that this square is best blocked and pressed with the right-side facing as you will be able to pin out the edges a lot easier with the fabric curling in rather than under.

SQUARE 37, LANTERNS 2: this all-over lace pattern is similar to Square 9, but Gold beads are swapped for Indigo beads.

Tech vids to help you with this square:

For this square you can choose between working for a chart OR worded instructions. Hopefully you will be able to remember the stitch pattern from the first mail-out in February, however, if you get stuck with any of the lace abbreviations, there is a tech vid which you can watch for some guidance, plus there are explanations of them in the Abbreviations list on page 27.

There are M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) increases on some of the rows. These increases are created by picking up the bar/strand between two stitches and working into it either from the back or the front (this determines the slant of the stitches).  On the chart itself they are both represented by 'M', but if you look at  the left and right sides of the chart it specifies whether they are M1L or M1R.

The stitches with a horizontal dash are K1tbl and P1tbl, which is the same as the symbol on the chart for Square 16, Embossed 2. So these stitches are knitted through the back on both right-side and wrong-side rows, and are therefore twisted to make them tight and neat.

Indigo beads are hooked-in to the square, of which there are 28, added to the knitting in pairs, so there is no pre-threading for this technique - you simply hook them in when you are instructed to do so.

Watch out for the needle size swaps for the rows of garter stitch. They are included in the worded instructions, but they are also written on the side of the chart on page 21. The main lace pattern uses 3.25mm needles (note that these are smaller than the main recommended size of 3.50mm, they are one metric size smaller), and 2.50mm needles for the garter stitch rows.

And these are your five squares for April which I hope you enjoying knitting up!

IT'S ALWAYS LOVELY TO HEAR FROM THE MEMBERS, AND THIS MONTH I HAVE THREE GREAT STORIES TO SHARE WITH YOU...

First up is Pat Gordon-Smith from London, UK, who came up with a brilliant idea for her 2025 Mystery Blanket. She embroidered individual labels for each square which she sewed on for reference. I think they look absolutely wonderful and finish off the blanket beautifully, and so uniquely too!

I wonder Pat if you are going to do the same with this year's Mystery Blanket?!? If so, don't forget to write in and share it with us! (Love the pic with Lobster in it, what a sweetie!!!)

The next story is from Joan Bray from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, UK, who has been a participant of several of my clubs over the years, and although Joan is not knitting this year's Mystery Blanket, she is very much keeping in the loop through the blog and our meetings at Yarn loft.

Joan was involved with running a beading workshop, which we were more than happy to support with our beads. The small group met up before Christmas and knitted up a beautiful sparkly bauble, the pattern for which was kindly given to the group by Mary Leeson (thank you Mary!).

Joan says: "I have just been reading the February blog, which reminded me to send you these pictures of our bauble knitting workshop. We are a small knitting group, but everyone who joined in thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you so much for supporting our group!"

The ladies had great fun knitting them up, and learnt all about bead knitting too. So not only was it a lovely day out, but new skills were learnt, which is always so wonderful to hear! Thanks for sharing this with us Joan!

The third and final story is from Susanne Ihmig from Essen in Germany, who was thrilled to have completed her 2025 Mystery Blanket ahead of the 2025 club starting. But it was spotted and consequently taken (or rather very generously gifted!), as Susanne explains:

Susanne says: "When I finished the 2025 Mystery Blanket, my son came for a visit and saw it spread out on the floor. He said, "Oh my gosh! This looks exactly like our holidays to Langeoog, I love it!" And of course, the blanket was then a gift for him!"

What a lovely gift to give to your son Susanne, and something he can keep forever as an heirloom. I am sure he appreciates all the hard work you put into making it, and will treasure it very dearly. It's a lovely story, thanks for sharing!

IF YOU HAVE A STORY AND ANY PICS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IN THE NEXT BLOG, BE SURE TO WRITE IN! Contact me directly at debbie@debbieabrahams.com and I will be more than happy to create a lovely little feature for you!

OUR FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR AT YARN LOFT TOOK PLACE LAST MONTH, and I was joined by Kerry, Vanessa, Alison and Mary for an hour of chat and knitting, hosted by the lovely Doreen.

It was great to see the ladies knitting up their blanket squares and enjoying the stitches and patterns. They are all getting on really well and I was thrilled to see such perfect squares, beautifully knitted!

Mary brought along her Swisscard Lite - a multi-tool with just about every little gadget a knitter may need! I definitely need that in my knitting basket and will put it at the top of my birthday list. It would make a great little gift, and so handy too!

If you want to join us at our next meeting on Wednesday 6th May we meet between 4:00pm-6:00pm at Yarn Loft which is at 118 Hucknall Road, Carrington, Nottingham NG5 1AD, tel number 07825 702433, website: www.yarnloft.co.uk.
